Unanticipated Rescue Operation

Even though we were anticipating a foster dog any day now, on Friday 10/9 we made an unanticipated rescue. While working on the deck and yard to prepare it for our first foster dog, we heard loud chirping in the woods behind our house. There were many birds chirping, but this definitely stood out. After an hour or two, I went to investigate. Two filthy, flea-ridden, skinny kittens were crying beneath a wood pile two houses down from ours. They were covered in dirt and poop, and their eyes were clearly infected.

After a quick call to our vet (Dr. Prior is the BEST), we started them on kitten formula. After some research, our estimate was that they were between 2 and 3 weeks old. Since they're so small, young, and weak, we've had to manually clean their eyes, pick the fleas, eggs, and flea dirt out of their fur. The gray male instantly bounced into to a playful kitten, but the white female hasn't started to come around until the last 24 hours or so. We're more confident that they'll both pull through, but it's still a long road for the female. She hasn't gained much weight in the past 4 days.

The good news is that she's eating better and better, and has more energy today than ever before. We have an appointment with our vet on Friday to check them out and look for other issues. As long as all goes well, we'll nurse them for another four weeks until they can go to a new home. Treetops Animal Rescue will post them for adoption if needed, but we already have a few leads :)
