Seward

Ready to hit the road

Took a 90-minute boat cruise at the Portage Glacier on our way to Seward.  We didn't see the glacier calving like we did in Glacier Bay, but it was a great way to start the day!

From there, we headed down the eastern side of the Kenai Peninsula to a town called Seward.  Seward's economy is largely tourist-driven, and most of those tourists come from cruise ships- which don't actually come downtown.  The docks are outside of town, and so are the t-shirt shops, jewelry stores, and seafood restaurants, so it was really cool to stay in a hotel that was actually located downtown.  The downtown area was definitely struggling, but our hotel was awesome.  It was European-style, so everyone shared a bathroom on each floor, but it just felt comfortable and welcoming... except maybe all the dead stuff.

 

 

We ventured out to a salmon bake restaurant in the woods and had a great dinner.  Afterward we drove up to the Kenai Fjords National Park for a late-night drive and walk (that's one of the nice things about the sun setting so late... the no-so-nice thing is that it's tough to know when to go to sleep).

Probably stayed up a bit too late for our early-morning halibut fishing.
